This tour is based around Chris Dobson’s book about the remarkable Medieval Florence of 800 years ago, a city studded with hundreds of massive towers built by rival families locked in bloody vendettas that plunged Florence into a civil war lasting for generations. On this tour you will learn the astonishing story of how these vanished giants came to be built, what they were originally like, and why they have almost entirely disappeared. We shall see some of the better-preserved towers, and you will learn how to spot the distinctive features of these buildings, hidden all over the old centre of the city.
This walking tour is informal, yet informative, and is delivered in the relaxed style typical of my art history tours.
