Have you ever wondered just why there is so much art in Florence? You might think that it was the vast amounts of money made from banking and the wool trade that allowed wealthy patrons to commission these artworks, but there is far more to it than that. For the wealthy, art also had a very political dimension, and the absolute masters in the use of art as power were the Medici, rulers of Florence. There was also the small matter of art as a way of escaping eternal damnation. On this tour you will see how the Medici used their patronage to commission artworks of great beauty, often full of subtle political messages, but sometimes used as a direct threat to anyone foolish enough to challenge their rule.
This tour will change the way you look at Florentine art.
